We asked HikeGuilin to guide us on hikes of the rice terraces from Ping’an to Dazhai and through the karst of the Li River. It was 2 day notice and all their English speaking guides were booked, but our consultant Alex, an experienced guide who had moved on to this different role, agreed to be our leader for two days. His English was perfect and he was very open, sharing his thoughts on the culture of China as well as his knowledge about the minority communities in the area. He seemed to know everyone, and was able to arrange a lunch for us with a Yao family on the spur of the moment. And the hikes were spectacular! We couldn’t believe we were there, it was so stunning. Then, when Alex found out that it was my 60th birthday, the company made a reservation for a special dinner at a Guilin restaurant with a beautiful view, and brought a birthday cake over!
